The EABA LCA Task Force is a collaborative platform for academic and industrial experts, working together to harmonise Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) practices, improve transparency, and provide actionable insights for sustainable algae-based solutions.
Launched in February 2024, the EABA LCA Task Force is a cross-disciplinary initiative uniting academic and industry experts to tackle the practical and methodological challenges of applying LCA to algae-based products.
Our mission is to bridge knowledge gaps by delivering:
LCA is a powerful tool for assessing the sustainability of algae products, but its application in the sector faces unique challenges:
The Task Force aims to harmonise approaches, improve data quality, and align with EU standards to ensure LCA studies are transparent, reproducible, and impactful.
The EABA LCA Task Force brings together a diverse community of professionals and researchers with a shared focus on sustainability in the algae sector. Our members include experts from academia and industry, all united by their interest in advancing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) or applying sustainability principles to algae-based systems.
Some of us specialise in LCA methodologies, while others are more broadly engaged in algae research, production, or technology development, covering both microalgae and macroalgae. We foster dialogue, knowledge exchange, and collaboration, creating a space where individuals with varying levels of LCA expertise can contribute to and benefit from our collective efforts.
We achieve our goals through:
Our work is iterative and inclusive, ensuring outputs reflect the needs of the algae community.
The EABA has been engaged in LCA for over a decade, organising European workshops (2012–2015) to address methodological challenges. The Task Force builds on this foundation, responding to the sector’s growing complexity and the need for harmonised, transparent LCA practices.
